Cambridge to Greenwich for the 157th Varsity Boat Race - part 1

Distance: 96 km / 60 mi

I’ve cycled to London quite a few times now; what made this trip special, and why am I writing about this one? Well, apart from getting lost in the Isle of Dogs, this was one of the best trips I’ve made: the weather was great, I think I’ve found what must be the nicest route between Cambridge and London, and most of all - unlike the previous year! - I made it to London in time to see the boat race.

An introduction…

I used to be a pole vaulter. A combination of the lack of training facilities in winter and injuries meant that I started running with the Hare and Hounds a lot more. During this time I cycled everywhere around Cambridge on my trusty mountain bike that I’d had since I was about 16. I’d thought occasionally about buying a road bike, and I bought one in summer 2008, as much on a whim as a seriously-considered purchase. That bike was a Mercurio RA5, which I still have, and it’s now seen many thousands of miles of riding.
